Today I received a telephone call from a researcher from Presentable a compant that produces TV programmes. In the telephone call that they wanted for a new programme for Channel 4 called Renovation Game, people in South Hampshire including Gosport, and asked me to add some information about it to Gosport.info . On Tuesday's between 4pm and about 6:30pm at The Gosport Discovery Centre a FREE Network meeting. This is hosted by Gosport TV GosportGoLive . During that meeting a video is taken then uploaded. The video are a mixture of information, local news, business owners say a quick thing about their business, interviews with local people and entertainment by local people.

Ghost Walks at Explosion the Museum of Naval Firepower.

Explosion! The Museum of Naval Firepower in Gosport is pleased to announce that its popular Ghost Walks will shortly be returning to the Priddy’s Hard site. The Museum has four walks planned for early 2012, these are on Wednesday 25^th January, Wednesday 1^st February, Tuesday 7^th February and Wednesday 15th February, all beginning at 6.30pm from the Museum Coffee Shop.

Members of the public will once again be able to discover the fate of former workers in a family friendly, guided walk through the historic buildings of the Royal Navy’s former munitions stores at Priddy’s Hard. Led by Victorian coroner, Edgar Goble, those in attendance can expect mystery and spooky surprises as they take a twilight tour to area’s not usually open to the public.

‘Loud and Proud’ young people’s group need new members

‘We may be young and we may be Loud, but we’re in it together, to make you Proud’ - this is the mantra of ‘Loud and Proud’, a lively and diverse group of young people aged 16-25 from Gosport and Fareham, who help their local community through volunteering. The Group are looking to raise the perception of their age group and show that whatever your background, level of education or confidence, there is a role for everyone.

Over the last 9 months the group have raised £1540 through fundraising activities, including walking on hot coals, sponsored walk, supermarket bag-packing, helping organising a Halloween Party for senior citizens and a Disco for children in addition to carrying out a wide range of other volunteering tasks.

Loud and Proud are funded by Comic Relief and are keen to recruit new members who whatever past experiences, want to feel part of the community, gain new skills and self esteem, make new friends and have fun at the same time!

How to find your Naval Ancestors - A Day Long Event - 3rd February

The event starts at 10am in the Discovery Centre with talks to 4:30pm and the Naval collection wil be open to 7pm and a visit to The Submarine Museum.The cost for the day is £20 booking 023 9252 3463.

This event aims to reveal the many types of record, from different collections, which throw light on the careers of your naval ancestors: what they did, where they served, what life was like on board Navy and Merchant Navy ships, and in submarines.

There will be a combination of talks and visits during the day. Illustrated talks will cover the records you can find and use at The National Archives, The Royal Navy Submarine Museum, The Royal Marines Museum and Gosport Discovery Centre.
In the afternoon, there will be a visit to The Royal Navy Submarine Museum (included in the cost for the day), and the Naval Special Collection at Gosport Discovery Centre will be available for browsing and research until 7pm.

Gosport Church Stonework is Restored

A £7,200 project has completed restoring the elaborate, and previously crumbling, stonework of Gosport Methodist Church, Stoke Road, Gosport back to its original glory.

The delicate sandstone of the over 100 year-old church (built in 1910) had gradually eroded as a result of weathering and traffic pollution. The urgent work to repair the damaged sandstone features began in November (2011) as they posed a potential risk to people using the footpath on Stoke Road, which runs below the church’s tower.

Highly skilled stonemasons from Wells Cathedral Stonemasons created hand-carved replicas of the sandstone surrounding the church’s apertures (unglazed openings in the church tower) and its colourful leaded-windows. The new stone has replaced the damaged features with replicas of their originals renewing the church to its former glory.

The church is a popular community venue for activities and groups such as Rainbows, Brownies, St John Ambulance Badgers, Age Concern, Sure Start, mother and toddlers, keep-fit, pilates, activity groups for the blind, diabetes group, Mandarin language classes, Solent Slot car club and the Mind charity lunch club. The exterior repair work has enabled the church to continue to provide a great service to the local community as it has endeavoured to do since it was built.

The project has been funded by a range of fundraising activities organised by members and friends of the church and a grant of £5,000 from The Veolia Environmental Trust made through the Landfill Communities Fund.

Treasurer of Gosport Methodist Church, Derek Slaymaker says, “It has taken just on twelve months from the start of this project to its completion. With the building being on the edge of the sidewalk, great care was necessary to make sure that the people passing below were kept safe. The groups using the premises were not unduly affected by the work, although restrictions to use of the access ramp were required.

“The Gosport Methodist Church Property Committee would like to thank Wells Cathedral Stonemasons for their work, both the way the repairs were carried out, and the quality of resulting workmanship.”

The Executive Director of the Veolia Environmental Trust, Margaret Cobbold, adds, “It is great to hear that the repairs are now complete, and that this popular community venue can continue to be used for a wide range of activities for many more years to come.”

1) It has be 9 months or more since I have sent out a monthly update, and if you do not mind I would like to change it to the way more site describe as a Newsletter from now on. I have about 200 emails with updates, changes and questions that I am going through, and hope to have cleared them over the next few months.

2) I have added December, Gosport events to the Google calender ( on the home page of www.gosport.info )and the Gosportinfo blogg ( http://gosportinfo.blogspot.com/ ), with some on Facebook/ Twitter. I hope that you will be able to attend some of them and, perhaps even send in your comments and photos, which I will add to the blog. As well I understand that The Explosion Museum is offering free entry between 17th and 24th December for Gosport residents and they have family friendly events over that period http://www.explosion.org.uk/ , I understand you need to take a Council Tax or Utility bill to prove your address. I plan to go to some Christmas Fayres on Saturday, I have a copy of George Paxton's booklet - 'St John's Forton Recollections and Remembrances' which I will send to one of the people who can tell which two Christmas Fayres, that I may have gone too, ( you will find the information on the Gosport.info web site/ blog/ calender/ Facebook/ Twitter) I will have it drawn by someone that will not have any connection to Gosport.info . I will send it anywhere in the World. OK it is only a little booklet.

If you want to see items from you or your group, please send them in. You can make comments, I used to have it open, but as some dodgy adverts were added I had to make it moderated, but you do not have to sign in, just make your comment, you should have to just click on the heading of an item, then go to the bottom of the item and click 'Add Comment'.

5) I have been lucky enough to receive enquiries from possible volunteers, via the Gosport Volunteer Centre http://www.gosportvolunteercentre.org.uk/ , but as the web site software I use NetObjects Fusion cannot be updated in more than one place, I have looked in to the possibility of using a Contents Management System. I understand this will allow me to set-up passwords to allow others to update the site or parts of the site. I have not been able to work out the best way, so any ideas are very welcom

Book one of our three one hour ticketed sessions on the 17th January 2012 and join us for activities and expert talks including comet making demonstrations and a genius bar for all of those perplexing astonomy questions. People who are unable to get tickets will be able to attend the supplimentary activities that will be freely available on the ground floor for everyone to enjoy (capacity limit applies).

The evening will be run in assocation with the BBC Two TV programme, hosted by Dara O'Briain and Brian Cox and will aim to educate and inspire people to develop their knowledge of the stars, the solar system and the universes beyond.

'Stargazing Live' will air on BBC Two on Monday 16, Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 January 2012 from 7pm.

Gosport Borough Council is pleased to announce that the final stage of preparations for the commencement of the building works for the new Gosport Leisure Park is now underway.

The Park, which will replace the ageing Holbrook Leisure Centre, will include:

A new £7.2M Leisure Centre with swimming pool, sports hall and health & fitness suites
All weather 5 and 7 a-side synthetic turf football pitches
A new hotel
A new pub and restaurant
A replacement children’s play area and fitness trail
Ancillary car parking and landscaping

A planning application to make some small revisions to the final scheme has been submitted and is now being advertised. The minor revisions deal with some small changes to the landscaping and to the elevational treatment of the Hotel.

The Council can announce that the Hotel provider has changed from Travel Lodge to Premier Inn.

The Leader of Gosport Council, Councillor Mark Hook said “I am absolutely delighted that building works will be commencing after Christmas. I know some people who constantly knock our Town said it would not happen but the new Leisure Park will be something all Gosport residents can be very proud of. The Council are working with four partners on a large number of complex legal documents and approvals which take a long time. But I have been determined to get the best for Gosport and not just rush things along for quick political gain. Gosport deserves the best. The change from Travel Lodge to Premier Inn is very positive and I must praise D C Leisure who has been excellent to work with.”

“Preliminary site investigation work has been ongoing and orders have now been placed for the steelwork for the new Leisure Centre and I look forward to the opening of the Centre in the Olympic year of 2012”.

Falkland’s 30 - War Patrols

Submariners remember their experiences

in the Falklands War.

A new exhibition at the RN Submarine Museum for 2012 – Were you there??

The exhibition, Falkland’s 30 - War Patrols is planned to open in the Spring 2012 and will comprise ten personal recollections from a variety of submariners who served on the five British submarines sent to the South Atlantic to support the Royal Navy Task Force in 1982. Organisers from the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire would like to hear from as many submariners as possible about their key memories of the war patrols carried during the conflict.

The aim of the exhibition is to explore from a personal perspective the experiences of the submariners who participated in the last major naval war of the 20^th Century. The Museum states that they are not looking for lengthy testaments but key memories that centre on the following:

Is there a single memory that captures why these patrols were different?

v What were the highs and lows?

v Were there moments of great excitement, real fear and laughter?

The Museum would also like to see any objects, photographs and other souvenirs from the Falkland’s Conflict for possible use in the exhibition.

FREE Down Memory Lane Meetings 3rd Tuesday from 17th January

Sarah Greenaway, the Events Officer at Gosport Discovery Centre has organised a new group called Down Memory Lane. It's an opportunity for people who are passionate about Gosport and love to talk about how it used to be. We are encouraging people to bring along any photos or postcards of Gosport that they would like to share and chat about. It is intended as a very informal, friendly evening in the Local Studies Centre on the High Street, Gosport .

It will run from 5 to 7pm starting Tuesday 17th January and the group will meet every third Tuesday of the month (a free event).

Two new exhibitions for Submarine Museum in 2012 - Also Christmas Opening

Two new exhibitions are planned for 2012 at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire . Exhibitions Horrible Science of Submarines and Falklands 30 – War Patrols will both open in the Spring.

Chris Munns, Director of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum said, “ 2012 will be a busy and very exciting year for us at the Submarine Museum. As well as the two exhibitions opening, the conservation project Saving HMS Alliance continues in earnest”

Horrible Science of Submarines has been devised with the Horrible Science author Nick Arnold. It will be a fun family exhibition looking at how smelly submariners were, the ghastly food they ate and what happened in the loo when they got their own back.

Falklands 30 –War Patrols will commemorate the 30^th anniversary of the Falklands Conflict and will comprise the personal recollections from a variety of submariners who served on the five British submarines sent to the South Atlantic to support the Royal Navy Task Force in 1982.

Both new exhibitions will open at the end of March ready for Easter when there will be a planned temporary closure of the historic WW2 era submarine HMS Alliance that is currently undergoing a major conservation programme.

The Museum is open during the Christmas holidays from Monday 19 to Friday 23 December and again from Wednesday 28 to Saturday 31 December. Visitors can go onboard HMS Alliance with a submariner to hear his stories on life beneath the sea. They can also peer into the only surviving midget submarine to have seen action during WW2 and climb inside the Royal Navy’s first submarine Holland 1 that is over 100years old. Families can play at being a submarine commander in one of six hands-on interactive stations and children can also become a pirate in the Skull & Crossbones exhibition.

Stone Repairs are underway at Gosport Church

A £7,200 project to restore the elaborate, yet crumbling, stonework of Gosport Methodist Church, Stoke Road, Gosport, is progressing well.

Since the church was built over 100 years ago (in 1910) weathering and traffic pollution has gradually eroded the delicate sandstone. Urgent work to repair the damaged sandstone features began in November (2011) as they posed a potential risk to people using the footpath on Stoke Road, which runs below the church’s tower.

Highly skilled stonemasons from Wells Cathedral Stonemasons have created hand-carved replicas of the damaged sandstone surrounding the church’s apertures (unglazed openings in the church tower) and its colourful leaded-windows. The stone features are expected to be fully repaired and restored by the end of December (2011) renewing the church to its former glory.

The church is a popular community venue for activities and groups such as Rainbows, Brownies, St John Ambulance Badgers, Age Concern, Sure Start, mother and toddlers, keep-fit, pilates, activity groups for the blind, diabetes group, Mandarin language classes, Solent Slot car club and the Mind charity lunch club. The exterior repair work will enable the church to continue to provide a great service to the local community as it has endeavoured to do since it was built.

Treasurer of Gosport Methodist Church, Derek Slaymaker says, “With the scaffolding in place for all to see, eyes are drawn towards the tower to view the work in progress. The craftsmen have cut away the corroded stone and templates have been sent to the quarry depot in Somerset so that new pieces of stone can be cut to replace the damaged pieces.

“A lintel on the west side of the building is also being replaced with new, and much re-pointing has been carried out. The wooden louvers (part of the tower) have also been checked, and to be found in good condition with no extra work needed.”

The Executive Director of the Veolia Environmental Trust, Margaret Cobbold, adds, “It is always good to hear that project we have supported is going well. The work will mean the church will remain a focus for community activities for many years to come and we are happy to be helping this scheme.”

CAROLINE TO HOST ENERGY ADVICE SURGERY 16th December

Caroline Dinenage, MP for Gosport, will be running a special energy advice event open to all members of the public on Friday 16 December 2011.

The surgery will be held as part of the Warm Homes Campaign, run by the fuel poverty charity National Energy Action, with support from E.ON, British Gas and other leading organisations.  Visitors to the drop-in event will receive a host of energy saving material as well as practical help and support for those concerned about their energy bills this winter.

Speaking about the importance of this issue, Caroline said: “There are still millions of people struggling to keep their homes warm and protect their families from the cold. This problem is one that affects thousands of vulnerable people within Gosport and I would encourage anyone concerned about their energy bills, or who is looking for free expert advice on how to better insulate their homes to take advantage of this specialist surgery.

Wow, what a year so far….still a few days left to magic up some wonderful surprises!

This spark of inspiration came from Clean Language Developing Group this Saturday, where Penny Tompkins mentioned how creative people become when they are inhibited in some way. I cannot endorse this enough.

This year when Mark was laid off, Liam came out of school, Paige started college, Laura decided to do 2 more years in further education, Vicky announced her plans to marry abroad, we found ourselves with less money and increased expenditure. But this has forced us to be more creative as a result the business and our family are now more effective and more efficient, going back to basics has been at the heart of our success. Learning from our clients, sharing resources and feeling part of an amazing collaborative team has been the making of us all.

As a company we have expanded from 1 to 5 new facilitators and our wonderful social media partner, with exciting news today that we could have another facilitator based in York and another one in Birmingham by the end of 2012.

All this has come from not worrying about money but focusing on what we love to do. Everyone has their skills and strengths, we all have our passions and things that drive us.

This December, come and join us at Explosion, the Museum of Naval Firepower at Priddy’s Hard, Gosport as we celebrate the magic of Christmas . Special festive highlights include a traditional Carol Concert in the eighteenth century gunpowder vault and a mixture of family activities in and around the main Museum.

Festive Fun begins on the 11th of December at 3pm when the Museum will host a traditional carol concert with the Gospel Phonics and St Johns Primary School Choir. For many of us the sound of carols heralds the arrival of Christmas, so if you and your family would like to get your Christmas off to a super start then why not attend the Mayor’s Civic Carol Service at St Faith’s Church, Victoria Square, Lee on the Solent.

The Service, led by the Reverend Peter Sutton, will take place on Sunday 18 December at 6pm, and will give young and old, families or individuals the chance to come together to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

“Sadly in the hustle and bustle of todays busy lifestyle the true meaning of Christmas, and the reason for celebration, is often forgotten,” said the Mayor Councillor Chris Carter. “It’s not just about getting the latest phone or the newest computer game, it’s about coming together to celebrate the Birth of Christ, of singing carols, being with loved ones and remembering those who are maybe alone at this special time, those who have maybe lost or can’t be with their loved ones.”

Everyone is welcome to pop along to St Faith’s Church at Lee on the Solent to join in this joyous occasion and to join the Mayor and Gosport Councillors as they give thanks to all the doctors and nurses; police and fire service, who work tirelessly throughout the Christmas period to ensure we remain safe.

Submarine Santa set to sail for Christmas

Santa takes over the most famous submarine in the UK at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Hampshire on the 3 and 4 December. He will be moving his whole Christmas entourage onto the historic WW2 era submarine HMS Alliance, complete with elves, their workshop and reindeer.

Reputedly, this Santa’s Grotto, now in its third year has become the UK’s most unusual location to find Santa before Christmas Day. This year, families will be encouraged to help the elves prepare for the big day and they can also take a ride around the Museum’s site on Santa’s Train.

Bill Sainsbury, Event Manager at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum said, “Submarine Santa is probably the most unusual grotto in the South”

Families are met by one of the elves who take them onboard the historic submarine into the former torpedo store that is packed with supplies for the trip and stables for the reindeer, they then pass through the mess accommodation spaces for the elves and see the present stores, elves testing workshop and their own tea room. Finally they pass by Santa’s mess into the sparkling control room where Santa is navigating their course from the periscope. Mrs Christmas may be found in the tiny galley making mince pies.

All profits from the Submarine Santa event will go towards the Saving HMS Alliance Appeal. The 1945 submarine is in need of urgent conservation to her outer casing; however inside Alliance is still beautifully preserved as she would have been during her service. The Appeal has raised just over £6million pounds, with £3.4 million being donated by the Heritage Lottery fund. A further £470,000 is left to raise.

With the tree erected and the lights in place it’s nearly time for the Christmas Festivities to begin with the annual switch on of the Christmas Lights in Gosport.

Yes, this coming Saturday, 26 November 2011, Gosport Borough Council will once again be turning the High Street into a Winter Wonderland with music, carols, lights, fireworks, snow and of course Santa on hand to discuss those longed for Christmas presents.

The event, which starts at 2.30pm, will feature the ever-popular Big Noise Samba Band, plus the Shenanigans with their foot-tapping festive songs. There will also be a mini panto from Thorngate Pantomime & Variety Company giving you a taster of their Christmas production.

Children from St John’s Primary School will gather to sing Carols before, at 5pm celebrity guest, Tom Owen of Last of the Summer Wine arrives to switch on the Christmas lights, accompanied by the Mayor, Councillor Chris Carter.

If the snow hasn’t beguiled the youngsters then on conclusion of the light switch on, there are fantastic fireworks that will, thanks to sponsors GS Builders.

If you are in town earlier in the day Search Museum and the Discovery Centre have some FREE events for the family. First at the Discovery Centre, the under 10’s are able to hear a story and make a lantern between 10-11am. Although FREE, children must be accompanied by an adult for this event. This is followed at 11am by the St Vincent Singers bringing you Victorian songs and carols also in the Discovery Centre, where audience participation is welcome! Then pop to SEARCH between 3pm and 6.30pm to see the Victorian house by candlelight, meet the winter animals and take part in some seasonal activities. Once again it’s all FREE!

Gallipoli 1915 explored at Submarine Museum - 7th December

The remarkable tale of the disastrous WW1 campaign at Gallipoli and its legacy will be explored by local historian Kit Power at a special fundraising evening talk, illustrated with numerous photographs, on Wednesday 7 December at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire.

Kit Power, historian said, “The Gallipoli campaign of 1915 was a costly military failure which involved terrible human suffering and remarkable individual courage with no less than 39 Victoria Crosses awarded in the nine months of the campaign. In particular, the exploits of the Submarine service in diving beneath the minefields were just astonishing”

There were two significant military achievements –one was the actions of the British submarines in the Dardanelles and the other was the remarkable and successful evacuation of the land forces at the end of the campaign – a classic success which remains unequalled to this day. This talk will explain the objectives of the campaign, what happened and, from some eye-witness accounts, what it was actually like. It will also describe the key commanders some of the ships, submarines and aircraft that were involved and what the Gallipoli peninsular is like today.

One of the heroes of Gallipoli was submariner Lieutenant Commander Martin Nasmith who gained the Victoria Cross whilst commanding HMS E11. He, penetrated Turkish defences protecting Constantinople Harbour, and torpedoed the steamer Istanbul. HMS E11 was the first hostile warship to enter the Golden Horn in 500 years.

Profits raised from this fundraising talk will go towards the Saving HMS Alliance. Work has now started on the conservation of the historic WW2 era submarine that is the memorial to all submariners who have lost their lives since the service began in 1901.

HMS Alliance selected as a sacred space for British classical composer

MARVIN AYRES - 'Sacred Spaces'

Marvin Ayres’s latest project is 'Sacred Spaces'. The idea behind 'Sacred Spaces' is to use incongruous places for composition and performance and reawaken the inherent and/or dormant spirit residing in these unlikely locations. “Pilgrims in search of sonic beauty”. These include anything from derelict industrial sites to historical places of interest, (incorporating National Trust and English Heritage) and re-appropriating them for musical purposes.

'Sacred Spaces' is an ongoing and evolving project with recordings in different environments. The instruments will be randomly tuned to compliment the environments, an microphones will be used to pick up the full ambience of the spaces once excited by the cellos, violins and violas.

One element which will link all the locations will be the same series of notes which will be assembled to create one collective piece composed from the overtones, sustains and reverberations recorded in each environment.

The intention is to return to the museum and submarine at a later stage and exhibit “TRUE 3D” surround sound installations of the compositions that were inspired by, and recorded there with possible live performance as appropriate. To accompany these journeys, the project will be documented with a film diary.

Marvin Ayres is a British modern-classical composer, cellist, violinist, pianist and producer. He has composed and recorded a diverse selection of minimalist albums, incorporating spatial soundscapes and psycho-acoustics, in his “True 3D Surround Sound”, and latterly 5.1 Surround Sound Audio Wall of Waves Studio. Sound engineer Alex Siddall will assist Marvin on the project.

Marvin’s latest work 'Harmogram Suite' is due for release in February 2012.

Recycling artists show gift ideas at Submarine Museum - 26th November

Local recycling artist Julie Williams will be showing off her Christmas handcrafted gifts as part of the Trash to Treasure Christmas Craft Market at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, in Gosport, Hampshire on Saturday 26 November from 11am -3pm. Julie has been working on a year long project to use everyday rubbish to create beautiful works of art.

The Trash to Treasure Christmas Craft Market at the Submarine Museum will feature Julie’s handmade crafts and those from other local artists. Everything from fused glass jewellery, beaded and embroidered handbags, ceramic decorations and Christmas tree baubles, garden decorations, restored furniture and accessories for the home will be available. There will also be opportunities to have a go yourself with hands-on activities making paper and a Christmas craft challenge.

Every week for the last year, Julie has rifled through her bins and chosen something to transform from trash to treasure. Self imposed rules of not using the same rubbish item twice, not buying new materials in addition to the item of rubbish and making something that is useful, beautiful or both. Each Saturday she has uploaded photographs and instructions of that week’s project on her blog Recycle4Real.

Julie Williams said, “I wanted to set a personal challenge to see if I could use things that I found around the house that could be made into beautiful gifts”

The projects have been very varied from a bracelet made from sweetie wrappers and vases made from boiled polystyrene cups, to a mobile phone sock made from pillow stuffing and a small amount of wool fibre! Julie has used a variety of craft techniques and materials.

They have all been favorably received with followers from as far afield as the Philippines and New Zealand as well as Russia and the EU. Many people have sent messages of support and some have sent pictures of their own projects inspired by the challenge which is great!

One man’s service remembered – From the Trenches of WWI to Battle under the Sea in WWII

A recent medal purchase by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire has uncovered a story of gallantry and dedicated military service spanning two World Wars. The medals of George Weston which include the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) from WW1 from his time serving in the British Army also include the Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal from WW2 when he served in the Royal Navy.

George Weston while serving as Private in the Royal Sussex Regiment was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) for his actions in rescuing wounded comrades at the battle of St Aubers Ridge in May 1915. He attended to many wounded under heavy fire and brought them back to the trench. He then carried back five wounded in succession from the advanced trench before he himself was wounded. George Weston would eventually serve with three different Army Regiments. On 21^st March 1918 George was reported missing in action but turned up two days later wounded in the arm.

After the WW1, George enlisted in the Royal Navy as a Stoker and in a long career spanning twenty five years he spent three separate periods in the Royal Navy Submarine Service. He served on many different submarines including the ill fated HMS M2 and was awarded the Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. During World War II he served on HMS Sea nymph.

George Malcolmson, Archivist at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum said, “We are delighted to have discovered the remarkable story of George Weston through his medals. It represents a fitting tribute to a gallant and dedicated man who served his country in both World Wars. The fact that he survived two of the most hazardous undertakings in military history is nothing short of miraculous”.

“At this time of remembrance our thoughts turn to his many colleagues who were not so fortunate”.

George Weston was born in Ashford, Kent in May 1897. His medals will be on display at the Submarine Museum from Friday 11 – Sunday 13 November. Volunteers start work on Lee-on-the-Solent greenspace improvements

Today (2 November 2011) volunteers from in and around Lee-on-the-Solent are rolling up their sleeves to start work on a new fence around Sandhill Pond, a wildlife and fishing pool in Alver Valley Country Park as part of a project to improve access to this quiet, underused area of open space off Cherque Way.

Contractors are also laying a new path which will open up the space and enable access to people of all abilities, including wheelchair users and people with prams.

The Cherque Farm Gateway Project will improve access to the Alver Valley Country Park and provide information and way-marking posts to enable people to find their way around. The project is going ahead thanks to a £16,000 grant from The Veolia Environmental Trust, awarded through the Landfill Communities Fund.

The project, which is being led by Lee-on-the-Solent Residents Association, is expected to be substantially complete by next spring. Much of the work will be undertaken by volunteers.

Currently people from the main part of Lee-on-the-Solent wanting to visit the country park have to climb a bank and cross a ditch to reach it. This makes it hard to easily reach for elder people, those with limited mobility or people with pushchairs.

The scheme will build a path into the park from Cherque Way, where Gosport Borough Council will be improving car parking. A meeting point will also be created and a weatherproof notice board and leaflet distribution point will be installed to provide visitors with information about the park.

In addition information boards will be placed at a few strategic points giving information about habitats and species found in the park. Twelve way-marking posts with maps will be placed at key junctions on the paths. Hedging will also be planted along the path.

When planning the project, the Residents Association asked local people what they wanted in the area. Results indicated overwhelming support for improvements to access to open spaces of which the Alver Valley is the only one locally.

Speaking about the scheme, chairman of the Residents Association, Richard Mackay, says, ‘It is great that this long-planned project has started. The new pathway will open up the Alver Valley Country Park to everyone, including people with disabilities, older people and people with prams and young children, fully realizing the potential of this underused greenspace.”

The Executive Director of The Veolia Environmental Trust, Margaret Cobbold, adds, “This is one of many projects to improve and open up public space the Trust is supporting in the UK. It is encouraging to see that volunteers are getting involved in helping improve the park for all to enjoy – their contribution is extremely important to projects like this.”

Solar Panels - An Update

I thought as I had put a few items about my solar panels, I thought I had better put my ideas about the change to the Feed in Tariff from 12th December from 43.3p (plus 3.1p for 50%) kWs produced to 21p.

I paid £7,650 for my nine panels on 8th July 2010, which I feel was a good price at the time as one of the quotes was nearly double that. I produced 1762 kWs in the first year giving an income £772 so as often quoted 10%, but what they forget is the panels are claimed to still hold 80% in the 25 years, so if you say average of 90%, so reducing the return by 1% to 9%.

The inverter would expect to be changed twice in the period. When buying I was told they cost £300 each, but on the TV (BBC) they said up to £1,600, so something like up to £130 a year to come out of the return, so 2% off down to 7%.

Also unlike money in the bank etc you would have the original capital, but I suspect the panels at that age would be worth nothing, or even the cost of disposing of waste, perhaps will cost money. The other side being cost of electricity at that time and if they are still producing worthwhile amounts. So 100% depreciation over 25 years so an extra 4% to come off leaving 3%.

Yes as tax free income 3.75% to a basic rate taxpayer, so a reasonable rate, but what return would you want if investing for 25 years, who knows what will happen, even the guarantee from the Government, well just because one Government says it is, whos to say what a govenment over the next two decades will say.

There is the saving from the electricity produced, they treat it as 50%, but I find even on a sunny day in winter I do not use all the electricity produced, so suspect use a small amount in the summer. If you go along with the 50% that would add 14p at 881 giving £123 or 1.6%.

As the change will reduce the start value to 5% and the start to a basic rate taxpayer 3.75% and 2% (electricity saving grossed up) leaving .75% so I can only see any use to higher rate taxpayers or those who will use most of the electricity produced. It may work if the costs of installation come down .

I am sure the Government will still subsidise the large wind farms (which people seem to like having in their view, I don't think). If these large firms find their not making enough, they will close down so the cost of running and decommisioning will go back to the taxpayer.

If you are still thinking about solar panels, it maybe worth leaving a couple of months, unless you feel you have a good price or can get in before the 12th December. I had quotes from 4 companies, in my case PV Solar Ltd in Scotland came in best and I was very impressed with their installation. If you are interested in them, I can give you a direct number. As I say LOOK around, I heard of someone paying £17,000 for a 5 panel system, so they will not gt their money back. Ian

Submarine Spooks in Gosport

The only surviving WW2 era submarine in the UK, HMS Alliance has been spookified with spooks as part of the Half Term Spooky Submarine Tours at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Hampshire.

Daring Half Term visitors have gone onboard HMS Alliance, greeted by their ghostly green guide, mist, eerie lighting and strange sound effects from the bottom of the sea. They were led through the submarine to meet the captain who told a scary story of life beneath the waves. There were also be some very strange crew members onboard.

FROM RECYCLING TO REUNITING

Refuse collectors often find more than the regulatory plastic bottles, card, paper and tins in recycling bins, but those emptying bins in Gosport, came across something completely out of the ordinary!

Whilst collecting in Albert Street on Monday, the Council’s waste contractors Urbaser found a large bird sitting on top of the recycling bin. A call was put out on their radio, and on hearing the call come in, Contracts Officer and keen birdwatcher, Alan Wheeler went to investigate.

The call mentioned a hawk so arriving on site Alan expected to see a small native bird, but sitting atop the wheelie bin making a lot of noise was a much larger bird, a Gyr/Saker Falcon. “He was obviously frightened and distressed with the sound of the bins being emptied and the noise of the lorry so I put a towel over him to try and calm him down. But instead of calming him he decided to try and peck his way out. So I got a cat box from our Dog Warden and transferred him safely to that for transportation back to the Town Hall.”

Luckily the bird had a ring on it and after a few calls Alan was able to reunite the bird with its owner, Mr Rendle from Petersfield. Pleased to get it back safe and sound Mr Rendle said; “He does have a small transmitter on him which enables me to track him, but unfortunately on this occasion it had come off. By the time I got to the location I found the transmitter but no bird, so I was delighted to get the call from the Council to hear he was safe. Sadly if they go missing they are often found dead, either attacked by foxes, shot or, because this particular bird originates from the desert, they can’t deal with our weather.”

This isn’t the first time the Council has reunited an animal found in a recycling bin to its owner. For in January 2007 a dog, nicknamed’ Binni’ by collectors was safely reunited with her loving family in West Sussex after she was found in a recycling bin in the town.

New Book in Aid of St Mary's Church Alverstoke

It is called ‘An Alverstoke Alphabet’ and is a 128-page, full colour, hardback, landscape format book with short chapters about Alverstoke arranged in the form of an Alphabet, “A is for ...”, “B is for ...”, etc. Each chapter is written by a different local person.

It was launched at the end of September and only 1000 copies have been printed (we have already sold over 600).
It costs £15 and can be bought directly from the Parish Centre in Green Road, Alverstoke.
It is also on ebay for £19 (which includes postage and packing).

British Gas - Home Insulation Offer

I understand that there is going to be a new Government scheme to insulate all houses. British Gas has set-up a scheme for their customers FREE loft and/ or cavity wall insulation.

I phoned up about it and as my loft has been insulated and boarded, I was mainly interested in the cavity wall. A number of years ago, when British Gas were making a similar offer, though not free, they said their contractors would not do my house as built before 1920 (around 1889/90) . I had another person in a few years later through a Gosport Council offer. They did some drill holes in both the main house and extention , and found a suitable cavity in both, but as after British Gas said they would not do it, I had tiles put on the top half of the house, front and back, they would only do the bottom half..

I saw the new offer from British Gas so tried again, then had a call back, after a few questions and answers, I was told that as my house was built around 1890 it would not have a cavity. I pointed out that I had lived in the house for 26 years and have had all the windows changed and seen inside the cavity between two layers of brick, including the metal ties between them, (well in the deeds it does say that the builders had to spend 'at least 100 pounds sterling to ensure workman like quality) . At that time builders would build to what they wanted. I live in Harcourt Rd and would be interested to hear from others in Gosport who have houses built 1920 or before, who know that they have cavity walls. (Email Me) I accept that they may not wish to try incase the walls are not able to cope, but why do they have to use flannel and lies, or is it just that British Gas want to pretend they are offering the service, but give bonuses etc if the people on the phones can reduce the claims for the insulation.(well they have to keep up the £125 per year profit per customer.

Problem With New Potterton Boiler in Gosport

I know someone in Gosport who has had a new boiler fitted. The previous one a Worcester it was 7 years old but worked fine. It was only being changed as it was being moved and they were advised that if moving a boiler it is better to put in a new one as they do not move well.

A new Potterton was fitted, but every time a COLD water tap was turned on or toilet was flushed the boiler 'fan' comes on. A number of things were tried nothing worked so a Potter engineer came. Not only was he very rude, but also clairvoyant as even before he had seen it he said, 'I know its nothing wrong with the boiler'. After a number of thing he announced that, there was nothing wrong with thw boiler or the plumbing it is the water main causing the pipes to judder when the taps turn off causing the magnetic switch to open. Even contacting Potterton they claim there is nothing wrong with the boiler it is the mains water that is a problem.

As much of Gopsort's mains water is quite old, the house involved was built in the 1930's mine in the 1890's so any houses built more than 80 years ago, perhaps a lot younger, should be careful to check a Potterton boiler will work with their water system.

I have to admit I have had a similar problem with my wood fuled boiler, worked fine for 12 years until the cylinder sprung a leak, a new 'more efficient' one was put in with the inflow pipe higher so as the imersion or fire is lit the heat goes back out of the inflow.. Plumbers come in and say, it is to do with the distance that the cylinder is away from the boiler or the position of the heat leak radiator, if that is the case why did it work for 12 years. If you know a plumber who will fit a new cylinder, which I will buy from Screwfix, which has one like the old one without all the hassle, please let me know. Ian

NEW FAMILY CENTRE APPROVED FOR GOSPORT

At the meeting of the Community Board held at Gosport Borough Council tonight (Monday 3 October) Members agreed to convert Agnew House in Mill Lane, Gosport into a new Family Centre.

The Family Centre will provide temporary accommodation for families with a local connection who have become homeless in the Borough and are waiting to be re-housed by the Council.

The Council currently use Barclay House in Trinity Green for this purpose, but the accommodation is of poor quality. The Council has been searching for an improved facility particularly with applications from homeless families increasing due to the recession.

Agnew House, which was closed this year, was originally constructed as a sheltered housing facility. The Council now propose to spend £850,000/£900,000 on the building, providing good quality accommodation for families, which will include the provision of solar panels on the roof to help reduce residents’ electricity bills.

Barclay House currently provides 23 units of accommodation and the Agnew Family Centre will provide 55 units. When complete the Council believe it will mean that homeless families can be offered good quality temporary accommodation, rather than being placed in bed and breakfast which, of course, places undue pressures on families already in difficult circumstances.

Now the proposal has been approved, a planning application will be submitted as quickly as possible with a view to having the first families in the Agnew Family Centre by July 2012.

Councillor Mark Hook, Leader of the Council said “I am delighted that we have found a solution for those residents who find themselves homeless in our Borough. The Agnew Family Centre will provide good temporary accommodation and will help families at a very difficult time. None of us know what is round the corner and we need to look after those families in our community who find themselves homeless. I believe we will all be proud of the new Agnew Family Centre”.

Work starts on £6.5 million project to save HMS Alliance

Work started today to save the historic WWII era submarine HMS Alliance based at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire. The £6.5 million pound project is planned to conserve HMS Alliance, the centre-piece of the memorial to 5,300 British submariners who gave their lives for their country in the Service.

Jason Lowe, Saving HMS Alliance Project Manager said, “The first stage of works will involve constructing a permanent hard standing platform underneath Alliance. This will then allow access to conserve the 1940s’ submarine’s outer metal casing which has suffered from severe corrosion and also give visitors a whole new view of this important historic vessel”

Vice Admiral Sir Tim McClement, Chairman of the Royal Navy Submarine Museum said today, “It is really exciting to finally be able start the actual physical work to save HMS Alliance. As the memorial to all the submariners who have fought and died in the submarine service, it is so important that she is conserved and brought to life for future generations to have the opportunity to understand and learn about “the silent service” that has been in operation for over 100 years protecting our nation.”

Councillor Christopher Carter, Mayor of Gosport said, “ HMS Alliance is listed in the UK’s historic ship’s register, sitting alongside the Cutty Sark, the Mary Rose, and HMS Victory in importance, and she is the only remaining WW II era submarine in the UK that’s open to the public. Her conservation for the future will continue to have a major impact for heritage and tourism in our area”

HMS Alliance was designed during the WWII for service in the Far East and was launched in 1945, as victory was achieved. She then began a distinguished 28 year career during the Cold War until she retired as the centrepiece of the Submarine Museum.

The project to save HMS Alliance received a £3.4 million lottery grant from the Heritage Lottery fund back in May. Exposed to sea water over cradles by the Museum quayside, the outer structure of HMS Alliance had corroded so badly that parts were literally in danger of falling into the sea below, a rusting process that has proved hard to arrest due to difficulties of access.

As well as the physical conservation, at the heart of the project is a new education programme and dynamic interpretation scheme which will bring Alliance ‘back to life’ for all visitors. Improvements will include dressing the accommodation spaces to reflect the decades of Alliance’s service from the 1940’s through to the 1970’s with interactive soundscapes that reflect how the submarine looked and felt whilst on operations. The Museum will also be taking the project to the local community with an outreach programme featuring a range of fun and engaging events. It is hoped that volunteers will play an important role in all these activities as the project aims to clock up to 2,500 hours of volunteer time over its life span.

Over £6 million in funds and pledges has now been raised, including the £3.4 million award by the Heritage Lottery Fund. A further £1.5 million is required for a new Alliance gallery.

We are pleased to reveal your new local Brass Band within Gosport and the surrounding Solent area – Gosport Solent Brass!

Following a recent amalgamation between Gosport Silver Band and Solent Concert Band, Gosport Solent Brass is now the local Brass Band within your local area!

During 2011, both bands amalgamated to continue to provide a sound musical ensemble and to promote Brass music within the local area. Solent Concert Band and Gosport Silver Band were formed during 1968. Solent Concert Band was originally based in Portsmouth, Hampshire. The band (originally known as Southsea Junior Band) was founded in 1969 by Wesley Garner, Noel Horner and Ron Moore, with the aim of recruiting young musicians, eager to learn the 'Art' of brass banding.

Over the years the band grew in size and standard, and by 1974, had become fully established under the new name of Solent Youth Concert Band. As the band grew in numbers, it became necessary to form a second band, which became the Solent Concert Band. Both bands continued to thrive, competing and entertaining throughout the years.

Solent Concert Band was a registered 2nd section band, regularly competing in the West of England Regional Brass Band Championships.

Gosport Silver Band was formed in 1968 as the brainchild of Alderman John Fairhall, a former Mayor of Gosport. While on holiday in Austria he heard a town band and thought that it would enhance the image of Gosport if it too had a town band. He put this idea to Gosport Borough Council, which supported him unanimously and made available a loan of £5,000 for the purchase of instruments, music and uniforms. The council also provided a rehearsal room.

The Band's founder Director of Music was Cecil Brown, a retired Royal Marines Commissioned Bandmaster, who led and directed the Band until 1982. He was succeeded by Albert Hall, also a former Royal Marines Bandmaster, who stepped down as musical director in April 2005 but continues to play in the band to this day. Albert was succeeded as Musical Director in April 2005 by Derek Jones and in September 2007 he was succeeded by Richard Sharp.

Our newly formed Brass Band rehearses in the Privett Suite at Thorngate Hall in Gosport, on Tuesday evenings (19:30-21:30) and also Sunday mornings (10:30-12:30). We perform a variety of different genres of music, and cater to suit our audience.

Gosport Solent Brass also has a Training Band which rehearses Sunday Mornings (09:15-10:15). As well as performing within an ensemble, the Training Band also offers help and tuition from members of Gosport Solent Brass. There are no age restrictions and there is no standard level of musical ability, all are welcome to join!

Gosport Solent Brass is intending to perform within our local area, as we feel it is important to support your local town. No gig is too big, no gig is too small. If you need a band, we are ready to play for you!!

We will be holding our annual memorial concert on Sunday 9th October at 2.30pm. The Concert will be held in the Theatre at Thorngate Halls in Gosport (PO12 3PX). The Main Band and our Training Band will be performing at the concert, and there will also be a raffle during the interval.

MILLENNIUM BRIDGE STAGE 2 WORKS TO BEGIN

Following the successful inspection and maintenance work carried out to the Forton Lake Millennium Bridge earlier this year, work which saw the bridge closed for only two of the expected five days programmed, preparations are now underway for the second stage of works to begin.

Engineers are due to return to the site to replace the all important lifting chains. Unfortunately this complex work will require a total closure of the bridge for an estimated eight days. This means that there will be no pedestrian access over the bridge and no vessel access under the bridge for the duration of the work.

Contractors will arrive on site on Monday 17 October and will close the bridge at 9.30am. It is scheduled to re-open by no later than 5pm on Monday 24 October.

It’s hoped that work will be completed well within the eight days scheduled; in which case the bridge will re-open immediately the work is finished. However, the work of replacing the chains is far more complex than the previous work carried out and is also dependant on reasonable weather conditions.

OLDER PEOPLES DAY 1st October

This coming Saturday (1 October) is the UK’s ‘Older People’s Day’ and Gosport Borough Council will once again be supporting the event by hosting some FREE ‘taster activities’ to encourage residents to ‘Get Active and Stay Active’ in later life.

The FREE taster sessions will include Zumba Gold, various forms of dance, tai-chi as well as some seated exercise for those less able. Activities will be held on Saturday 1 October at Club Hampshire in Willis Road and at Juniper Court in Cunningham Drive.

An information guide to promote what’s available in the way of social activities in the community for older people during the month of October will also be produced. The event is being supported by Gosport Older Persons Forum, as well as local community groups, clubs, community colleges and faith groups.

Top banjo and ukulele celebration for first British submarine anniversary

Live Banjo and ukulele’s groups will be performing at a one off special day – the Arnold Forster Banjo Fest to commemorate the 110^th anniversary of the launch of the very first Royal Navy submarine Holland 1 and the beginning of the submarine service on Sunday 2 October at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport, Hampshire. Top UK banjo artist Richard Collins will be performing with Dalebilly alongside Portsmouth’s own ukulele orchestra, the Pompey Pluckers.

Bill Sainsbury, Event Manager at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum said, “Banjo and the ukulele were very popular instruments in the early 20^th century. Their size allowed them to fit easily onto a submarine.”

“Holland 1, the first British Royal Navy submarine was launched 110 years on 2^nd October 1901. Her commander Arnold Forster was known for his love of the banjo, so it seemed fitting to commemorate the beginnings of the submarine service with an afternoon of Banjo and Ukulele music featuring the leading Banjo musicians of today.”

The afternoon of live music will be headlined by top UK banjo artist Richard Collins whom is performing with Dalebilly. He is one of the best exponents of the Bluegrass Mandolin. It is planned that Richard Collins will duet with fellow banjo band member Richard Holland. Dalebilly is essentially a festival band as Kevin & Neil Garratt (father & son) are from Leeds in Yorkshire, and the rest are Hampshire based. All members of the band have played extensively in other groups. The lineup will consist of Kevin Garatt - guitar, dobro, vocals, Neil Garratt - lead guitar, vocals, Richard Holland – banjo, Richard Collins – mandolin, vocals and Claire Collins – Bass.

Dalebilly will be supported by the twenty strong Pompey Pluckers, a ukulele orchestra that perform a wide variety of popular music. There is also the opportunity for beginners and musicians to have a go themselves and join in with a banjo master class or a uke beginner’s class. Visitors can also meet Arnold Foster and his crew and climb onboard Holland1, herself.

The Royal Navy Submarine Museum is open every day and a visit includes a tour of the historic WWII era submarine - HMS Alliance with a submariner to hear his stories first hand about living beneath the waves. Visitors can also peer into the only surviving WW2 midget submarine, step inside the Royal Navy’s first submarine Holland 1. Tickets are free with a valid museum ticket or £6 per person. Community JOINS IN CLEAN-UP AT Gosport

Gosport Borough Council will be holding a number of Community Clean-Up Days in the Borough during September and October.

Nine areas have initially been identified as ‘in need’ of a Community Clean up following reports of fly tipping. They are:

Holbrook
Lee East
Leesland
Peel Common

“A similar project was held in the Rowner area by the Home Group in December 2009 & September 2010,” said Councillor Graham Burgess, Chairman of the Community Board at Gosport. “The events were a great success as they achieved their objective of uniting the local community and the agencies working within the community, with everyone working together towards the common goal of clearing up their neighbourhood and making it a better place in which to live.”

The planned Community Clean Up events have been funded by the Council’s partner Housing Associations, through contributions held in a Community Chest Fund. This fund allocates money to schemes which aim to enhance the lives of people living in Gosport communities.

During the clean up days the following people will be present:

Housing Officers to answer any tenancy management questions.
Officers from Kier Building Maintenance, the Council’s repairs contractor, will log any housing repairs reported, and a technician will be available to carry out any jobs which can be completed on the day.
The Council’s Energy Efficiency/Sustainability Officer will discuss and advise on energy efficiency
Streetscene will advise on recycling and also promote the ‘Love Where You Live’ national campaign (to be launched by Keep Britain Tidy in September).

To encourage recycling, there will be a ‘recycling area’ where residents can place any unwanted items that are still in good working order. Other residents can then take away items which may be useful to them free of charge. Items left at the end of the day will be offered to charities such as Jacob’s Well or British Heart Foundation, or disposed of. Clothing or books brought for disposal will be collected and donated to charity via the local recycling banks.

A scrap metal merchant has also confirmed that he that will attend the clean-up days to take away any scrap metal.

Lessons in Saving Submarines shared in new talk season

A new season of evening talks at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, in Gosport have been announced. The first talk on Thursday 22 September will be by Ian Clark, one of the UK’s leading engineering conservators who will be sharing lessons from past heritage engineering projects such as the award winning conservation of Holland 1, the Royal Navy’s very first submarine was conserved after being wrecked for 69 years.

Ian Clark is a fully elected member of The Institution of Mechanical Engineers. During his talk he will explore and examine the complex decisions that define a preservation strategy for saving historic engineering assets such as HMS Alliance, the WW2 era submarine based at the Submarine Museum which is shortly to undergo major conservation.

Ian Clark, said, “The decisions that became the keel blocks for the Holland 1 project, will resurface again for HMS Alliance, but they are far more complex”

He started his career as a mechanical engineer in an independent industrial museum and in the late 1990’s led the project to restore Holland 1 as a submarine that visitors could experience and explore for themselves.

The Ian Clark talk is part of a new season of evening Third Thursday Talks at the Submarine Museum which start on Thursday 22 September. This season will also include a talk on the development of the submarine service in the interwar period and culminate with tales of derring- do by contemporary submariners by bestselling author Tim Clayton.

Chairperson: Fareham & District Branch of Parkinson’s UK

This is a thriving Branch with around 250 members, many of whom have Parkinson’s. Our current Chairperson will stand down at the end of February 2012 and we are looking for someone to take her place at that time and, if possible, to spend time during the previous month with her and with the membership of the Branch to familiarise and experience the type of work that will be involved. (a voluntary position)

We are looking for a dynamic, committed person with excellent leadership, communication, interpersonal skills and empathy for those who have a progressive neurological condition and for their carers. You will need to manage a committee and liaise with the Head Office of Parkinson’s UK. You will be asked to attend as many of our meetings as possible.

Each month we have a coffee morning on the first Monday morning, committee meeting on the second Monday and Leisure & Pleasure (activities and therapies) on the third Monday morning. These are all held in Stubbington. Other activities currently include fortnightly exercise classes and ten-pin bowling alternating on Tuesday afternoons and other social events and fundraising activities in Stubbington, Lee, Gosport and Fareham.

The aim of our Branch is to offer a chance for people with Parkinson’s to meet in a safe environment, for support and friendship with each other. Committee members, with the help of professionals, also aim to provide information on all aspects of Parkinson’s.

GOSPORT COUNCIL APPEALS TO RESIDENTS FOR POSITIVE CHANGE TO CHEWING GUM DISPOSAL

Gosport Borough Council is launching a new campaign to raise awareness of chewing gum litter, by urging residents to dispose of their gum responsibly.

As part of the campaign, Officers will be in Gosport High Street between 9-12 onSaturday 10 September, giving away free gum disposal wraps and raising awareness of the £75 fine you could receive for dropping gum. Gum wraps will also be made available from the Town Hall from Friday 9 September on a first come first served basis. Impact advertising will also be displayed in the Borough, paid for by the chewing gum industry. This will take the form of roadside banners, posters at bus stops on lampposts and telephone kiosks, all reminding residents to bin their gum responsibly or risk a fine.

Partnered with the Chewing Gum Action Group (CGAG), an organisation chaired by DEFRA and funded by the chewing gum industry, the Council aims to challenge consumer behaviour and support the group’s annual drive to tackle the problem of gum litter. Now in its sixth year, the CGAG campaign works with councils to develop initiatives to reduce the level of chewing gum litter. Gosport is among 12 Local Authorities signed up to the 2011 activity.

Figures show that authorities involved with the campaign see gum litter reduced by an average of 43%, with some reporting even greater reductions. For example, following last year’s campaign Gosport achieved a 69% reduction. The Chairman of the Community Board at Gosport, Councillor Graham Burgess said: ‘Chewing gum litter is a significant and costly problem for us so by partnering with CGAG we aim to raise awareness of the issue and to encourage residents to take action. We hope this will challenge the gum chewers out there to re-think how they dispose of their gum and to understand that it’s their responsibility to bin their gum responsibly and, if they don’t, they could receive a fine. By doing this we hope to see improvements in both the appearance of our town and the cost savings in having to clear up the mess.’

Behavioural psychologist Professor Geoff Beattie said: ‘When a person drops a piece of chewing gum it is often a thoughtless, mindless act but one with important social consequences for us all. Because once that single piece of litter has been thrown onto the ground, other people are more likely to throw their litter down as well, making our neighbourhoods less pleasant as a consequence.’CGAG has been running successful campaigns since 2006. Campaign co-ordinator Natalie Forrester said: ‘With 12 Local Authorities signed up to the new campaign, we aim to build on previous years gum reduction results. We hope that as a result of the campaign more consumers than ever will take positive action and dispose of their gum responsibly. Binning your gum is a small action which can have big consequences for the local area.’

2010 CAMPAIGN SUCCESS STORIES Case study - Gosport Borough Council

Gosport applied to the 2010 CGAG campaign after deciding to take action to cut levels of gum litter in the Borough’s shopping areas. The Council rolled out advertising in high footfall areas and on transport and launched a campaign to engage the local media. Gum pouches were distributed and campaign launch events were staged in four high profile locations, including Gosport High Street. A ‘Bank of Bubblegum’ stunt was designed to highlight the fixed penalty notice for anyone caught littering their gum, and gum disposal boards were displayed for residents to affix their used gum. Nine out of ten sites saw gum litter reduced, with an overall reduction of 69% across the Borough.

The Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport has just announced a full programme for the deaf community on Saturday 10 September as part of the national Heritage Open Days event. The Signalong choir will be performing in front of the only surviving WW2 era submarine HMS Alliance, followed by a British Signed Language tour of this historic submarine with a submariner.

Bill Sainsbury, Event Manager said, “We are really delighted to be welcoming the Signalong choir to the Submarine Museum. They will be signing to golden oldies that many of the submariners serving on HMS Alliance would have enjoyed”

“Signed singing is a visual art form when BSL and Signed Supported English are combined with music. It is also a good way to bring deaf and hearing people together and helps to raise Deaf Awareness amongst the general public”

The Signalong Choir are a signed singing group, made up of volunteers of all ages and walks of life, who enjoy meeting together to celebrate the beauty and importance of British Sign Language through song.

The BSL tour of HMS Alliance will be led by one of the museum’s submariner guides and interpreted by British Sign Language specialist Sarah Granger. A tour through HMS Alliance takes the visitors from the torpedo stores, through the accommodation spaces, into the control room and through the engine room.

Heritage Open Days on Saturday 10 September at the Submarine Museum also includes a new tour into Fort Blockhouse, previously known as HMS Dolphin. This will also be a submariner led tour from their point of view of the former home of the British submarine service which will include a visit to the submariner’s chapel and into the officer’s mess to see the Harold Wylie paintings and the rooms where Commanding officers would receive their secret orders.

HMS Alliance and the Royal Navy Submarine Museum is the memorial to the Royal Navy Submarine Service and are open every day throughout September and October.
