The secret life of a cockle unveiled at Submarine Museum

The secret life of the Solent’s cockles, mussels and other sea creatures will be put under the microscope for all to investigate as part of the Family Fun Lab of summer holiday activities for children at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum on Thursday 5 August from 11am.

Bill Sainsbury, Marketing Manager at the Submarine Museum said, “Children will be able to get up close and personal with these little local sea creatures to find out about their lives”

Using giant microscopes, families can explore how the tiniest of sea creatures eat, breathe and survive with leading marine wildlife experts. There will even be an opportunity for cockle-crunching to find out how hard it is to open a cockle shell.

This family event is part of a summer science season of events at the Submarine Museum. Other highlights include “The Best Science Show Ever!” as leading science experts come to Gosport for a one off unique show looking at the science of submarines.  The Family Fun Science Lab will finish on Thursday 26 August.

The Royal Navy Submarine Museum is open every day.  A visit includes a tour of the historic WWII era submarine - HMS Alliance with a veteran submariner to hear his stories firsthand about living beneath the waves.  Visitors can also peer into the only surviving WW2 midget submarine and step inside the Royal Navy’s first submarine Holland 1.  For more information visit www.submarine-museum.co.uk or call 023 92510354.
