Submarine Museum Gears Up For A Flood of Visitors
The mysteries of science and wacky inventions are being explored this summer at the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport as the Museum looks forward to a busy summer season. Family shows, workshops and activities are planned to highlight this theme at the Submarine Museum to coincide their newest submarine exhibit the replica of the 17th century Drebbel. .
Bill Sainsbury, Marketing Manager at the Submarine Museum said, “This summer the Submarine Museum is pulling out all the stops to welcome our new visitors from all round the Harbour by putting on the largest number of school holiday activities that we have done for a long time”. “Inspired by Cornelius Van Drebbel, the 17th century inventor of our latest submarine; every Thursday, families are invited to join us at the Family Fun Lab for shows and workshops delving into the mysteries of science and submarines”
This summer science season starts with The Magnificent Bubble Show on Thursday 29 July where children can play with bubbles of all shapes and sizes. Other highlights include delving into local rock pools to study the lives of the Solent’s cockles and “The Best Science Show Ever!” as science experts from the BBC’s Bang Goes the Theory Road Show team come to Gosport for a one off unique show looking at the science of submarines. The Family Fun Science Lab will finish on Thursday 26 August.
The new submarine on show at the Museum is the only working replica of the world’s first fully submersible craft known as the Drebbel which was built in 1620. The new waterbus link will allow visitors shopping in Gunwharf Quays to easily cross the Harbour to visit the Submarine Museum.
The Royal Navy Submarine Museum is open every day. A visit includes a tour of the historic WWII era submarine - HMS Alliance with a veteran submariner to hear his stories first hand about living beneath the waves. Visitors can also peer into the only surviving WW2 midget submarine and step inside the Royal Navy’s first submarine Holland 1.
