Gosport Events

I remember when I was young that over the year Gosport had events where it seemed everyone was involved. I do not know how it was done but they are great memorises. I have seen photos from the generation before and the organisation was even more impressive. I know part of the problem today is insurance and health and safety, but that cannot be the whole problem.

I feel in the past, Gosport businesses were owned an run by people in Gosport, now many have management and/ or ownership out of Gosport. Lots out businesses now use outside contractors. If you want to have your business represented at Gosport events, please have a look at the list on Gosport.info .

At the Gosporteers Carnival from Walpole Park on 14th June, I wanted to see more of the Gosport organisations in the Parade and Arena displays, also Gosport businesses supporting the event. I remember the freebee's of the past and it looks like Waitrose are going to provide up to 250 'bags for life' for the gifts, cards and leaflets' to be put in. As well as the programme, that it is hoped to be produced. I understand that providing vehicle's for floats, but if you are a business without a suitable vehicle, perhaps you could share the cost with a business that does. Dave Webber is planning to provide prizes to the best floats and walkers in the parade.

Have you any ideas to help Gosport events, please let me know, even agreeing to put up posters is a great help. Ian

William Camper

- I found your web site after a search for information about Camper and Nicholson. I wonder if you know any more about my great great Uncle William Camper of Camper and Nicholson fame, He died I believe in 1867 shortly after retirement from Camper and Nicholson, but this is all I know about him from my family tree. He was five years older than my great grandfather Richard Camper. One of the seven children of whom the oldest was William. I think I have the great's right..

There is no mention of his being married on the family tree. I am interested to know if you have any more information about him other than that on your web site regarding the company history. Some years ago I was led to believe there was a wife? But no children? But such information is vague.
My interest is simply that I enjoy sailing and found the link to him from my family tree compiled by a second cousin now long dead sadly. He was something of a compiler of family information I believe. Such information is lost and I now regret not taking on the task of tracing the family when he asked me to back in the 1970s. Gosport.info - Update March 2008

1) A new booklet entitled 'Trevor J. Tatham, Architect, of Lee-on-the-Solent' by local historian Philip Eley, is now on sale.
Trevor Tatham was an architect who lived and worked in Lee between the wars. During that time he designed more houses
and bungalows than any other architect - and around a hundred of his homes are still standing today. He was also responsible
for shops and offices. Trevor also represented Lee as a councillor both before and after it became part of the Borough in 1930.
He also was a teacher at the Edinburgh House School in Lee. The booklet is split into three sections - two are concerned with
Trevor's life and work whilst the third is a gazetteer of his known works in Lee. It is illustrated with architectural drawings from
the original building plans. This will appeal to anyone with an interest in Lee-on-the-Solent, but especially anyone living in one of
Trevor's houses. Priced just £1.00 it is available from the County Library branch in Lee High Street, and also at Elson Library
and the Local Studies Centre (the old Gosport Museum) in Gosport High Street.

Gosport.info - Update February 2008

1) I was wondering if anybody remembers the dancing schools "Sunshine Kiddies" and "Marina Juveniles" ? If my memory serves me correctly, the former school was near the Ferry Gardens, but I cannot remember the name of the Road. We used to wear pale green dresses with a flared skirt and an red embroidered emblem encircled in red on the bodice. The other school I think was either at Nicholson Hall, or nearby, I think a Mrs. Sainsbury played the piano for us. Wendy Atkins

2) NCH would like to announce the launch of the Extended Family newsletter and the Extended Family website, which contains information on the Alverstoke branch. The NCH ‘Extended Family’ includes ‘Old Boys & Girls’ - people formerly in branches of our children’s homes – and former NCH staff. We also think of lifelong supporters and Methodists as family and important to the heritage and future of NCH. The term ‘Extended Family’ is derived from an NCH publication by that name, which ran from 2000 to 2004 - before that, the magazine was called ‘Our News’. The Extended Family magazine will be published twice a year, and our goal is to continue the tradition of regular communication with the lifelong supporters who are so important to our work. In this spirit, we have also launched a website for the Extended Family, where you can read about all the updates and news, view pictures and videos, and contribute your own stories and materials. If you have access to the internet, we encourage you to visit this website at: www.myspace.com/extended_family. Please feel free to contact the Extended Family team at NCH directly with comments, suggestions, or contributions, at extended.family@nch.org.uk or on 020 7704 7175. 3) Have you recently moved into the area from abroad? Are you feeling isolated? Are you unsure about what happens in your child's school, what procedures you need to follow to gain access to services, how you can learn the language or get training for a job? Whatever you worries or anxieties, we aim to help you and your family however we can. We would love to know your views about getting a regular group up and running to help each other. Pop in and see us in the cafe, have a drink, a snack and a chat. Monday 17th March at the Discovery Centre from 4 til 8 pm. The above event is being put on jointly by Brune Park, Bay House and Bridgemary. It will also be supported by St Vincent College, Gosport Borough Council and Gosport Voluntary Action. Publicity flyers will be circulating soon, with translations in several other languages. If you need any more information, please contact me.Lauren Stevens, Extended Learning Co-ordinator, Brune Park Community College, Military Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 3BU, 02392 616000 Ext 251
